• Randy Couture was getting ready for a fight. However, we didn't know whether it meant another tournament or if he would come out of retirement to fight in a mixed martial arts bout. Well, Couture confirmed on Wednesday via the Brawl Sports blog at the Houston Chronicle web site that he's indeed coming out of retirement. According to Couture, a match for the Heavyweight Title against Tim Sylvia will officially be made in the coming days. The match is expected to take place at UFC 68 on March 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
  
  

• The PRIDE Fighting Championships announced on its web site Monday that Fedor Emelianenko has signed a long-term extension with the company. The announcement puts to rest any rumors that Fedor might sign with the UFC.
  
  

• Boxing writer Thomas Hauser of SecondsOut.com reported late Monday that HBO will televise at least three UFC cards in 2007. It's believed HBO has the option for at least three more additional telecasts.
  
  

• According to the Houston Chronicle, UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk believes he'll be able to return from surgery to his right shoulder in time to defend his title in June. Sherk indicated he's anticipating fighting either Joe Stevenson or Spencer Fisher.
  
  
  

• The full debut card for EliteXC and their initial broadcast on Showtime on February 3 was officially announced last week. Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie is still scheduled. Other notable fights include David Loiseau vs. Joey Villasenor, Charles Bennett vs. K.J. Noons, and Wesley "Cabbage" Correia vs. Antonio Silva. Female fighter Gina Carano has been booked for the main card against an opponent that has yet to be determined. Meanwhile, Javier "Showtime" Vazquez is scheduled to appear on the undercard in his first MMA fight in three years.
  
  

• Paul Buentello recently revealed on MMAWeekly.com's "SoundOff Radio" that a fight with notorious street fighter Kimbo Slice is in the works. The fight, which started out as an online joke, has a 60 percent chance of taking place, according to Buentello. The "Headhunter" also said he'd like return to the UFC once his Strikeforce contract is up and expressed a desire to fight Mirko Cro Cop.

• In an interview with Tokyo, Bill Gates said that he considers Nintendo to be toughest competitor in the console wars.
  
  "The strength of Nintendo has been very impressive and surprised a lot of people. And [considering] the strength of the - we see Nintendo as our toughest competition", says Gates.
  
  Obviously this is a bit surprising since is widely considered to be Microsoft's main competitor in the market. But with the success of the DS and now the Wii, Nintendo is certainly the strongest its been in awhile.
  
  

• Microsoft announced at the 2007 International Show in Las Vegas that they have sold 10.4 million units worldwide.
  
  "We have sold through December 31st 10.4 million consoles across 37 countries around the world," said and devices president Robbie , noting that that's "half a million units ahead" of projection.
  
  
  

• Despite tons of manufacturing problems, has announced that they have shipped one million PS3 units to North America in the first six weeks of sales.
  
  Jack Tretton, chief executive of Entertainment, confirmed the figures at the Show in Las Vegas yesterday, commenting: "SCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3 including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis. The fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, the PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming."
  
  In comparison, the sold 1.8 million units in the same timeframe, while the sold 600,000 units.
  
  

• According to website www.MYGEN.com.au, Epic will be releasing 2 new multiplayer maps later this week on . One level looks to be a downed helicopter level, much like . The other seems to be a museum

• Microsoft announced that gamers will have more chances to take part in the public multi-player demo of Halo 3 this spring. According to Microsoft, gamers can get a slot on the demo testing by buying the upcoming Crackdown, which will ensure them a slot. For those not wanting to purchase a simply for a demo, there's an alternate method. Halo 2 players can get into the demo by playing for a total of 3 hours from Feb. 1, 2007 at 12:01 ESY until Feb. 3, 2007 at 11:59 PM. After playing for 3 hours, they are then advised to go to www.halo3.com to register their gamertag. The first 13,333 players will get the slots. Interesting, but why expect anything less from Bungie.
  
  

• Rumors are flying that Namco is developing an 360 version of Tekken 6 along with the PS3 version. Several titles originally announced as PS3 exclusives have made the switch to multi-platform and even 4 is rumored to be headed to the Xbox 360 as well. No official word yet on Tekken 6 though.

• "Champagne Gold" wasn't exactly our first choice for a new PSP color -- it's a little nouveau riche for our blood -- but Sony will be rolling it out in Japan on February 22nd, adding it to their current line up of black, white, pink, silver & blue models. No word on if, or when, it might be released here in the States, but Sony hasn't been very good about introducing new PSP colors over here.

• You guys remember Killer Instinct, right? You know, Cinder? Glacius? Well it looks like Rare might be coming out of the dark with an Xbox 360 edition. At least that's what the UK gaming magazine Games TM is saying. If this happens to be true, this could be a great move for Rare.

Rare hasn't exactly had the best lineup so far, starting the 360 out with Kameo: Elements of Power and Perfect Dark Zero. They have been getting better though with the newly released Viva Pinata and a new Killer Instinct game can only help them that much more. The premise of a next-gen Killer Instinct is very tempting and the "wow factor" alone would sell a great deal of copies. This is going to stay in the rumor stage until we hear something concrete from Rare. Also, Orchid is hot.

• ITB Harddrive News - There are many things in life you can't ever have enough of; money, gadgets and of course hard drive space. In the ever going space race Hitachi dropped the next big step in storage capacity last month. With this much storage space you can store 250,000 songs or 1,000 hours of SDTV or 250 hours of HDTV or 333,300 photos or even 520 iTunes music store movies, of course they don't have that many and if they did who could afford all of them? • Iphone News -At a press conference at CES today we learned that Cingular intends to initiate its rebranding to AT&T (not AT&T Wireless) by mid-year -- in time for the iPhone launch. While they weren't entirely certain of an exact date, they definitely seemed determined to make sure the AT&T branding was firmly in place by the time the industry-changing device was announced. Cingular couldn't officially confirm whether Apple could or couldn't make an identical device without a cell radio (i.e. the "true" video / widescreen / WiFi iPod), but they stated "Apple can build [their] devices." Other interesting Cingular / Apple bits:

It was again confirmed that customers must agree to a two year contract, even if that requires customers to renew their current service.

There is no iTunes revenue sharing.

There will be no physical branding on the iPhone but Apple branding. The only AT&T / Cingular branding will be on-screen where the carrier readout is shown.

Although nothing was confirmed, Cingular made it sound as though users might be able to expect a specially bundled data plan for the iPhone.

• Capping literally years of speculation on perhaps the most intensely followed unconfirmed product in Apple's history -- and that's saying a lot -- the iPhone has been announced today. Yeah, we said it: "iPhone," the name the entire free world had all but unanimously christened it from the time it'd been nothing more than a twinkle in Stevie J's eye (comments, Cisco?). Sweet, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the screen when it's close to your face, 2 megapixel cam, 4GB or 8 GB of storage, Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR and A2DP, WiFi that automatically engages when in range, and quad-band GSM radio with EDGE. Perhaps most amazingly, though, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course) with CoverFlow out of the gate. A partnership with Yahoo will allow all iPhone customers to hook up with free push IMAP email. Apple quotes 5 hours of battery life for talk or video, with a full 16 hours in music mode -- no word on standby time yet. In a twisted way, this is one rumor mill we're almost sad to see grind to a halt; after all, when is the next time we're going to have an opportunity to run this picture? The 4GB iPhone will go out the door in the US as a Cingular exclusive for $499 on a two-year contract, 8GB for $599. Ships Stateside in June, Europe in fourth quarter, Asia in 2008.

• Total HD Disc from Warner - Warner Home Video's press conference concerning the Total Hi Def disc that has HD DVD and Blu-ray all on one disc is currently ongoing, and it stated that the discs are able to contain dual layers of both HD DVD and Blu-ray on one disc. The first Total Hi Def releases will hit in the second half of this year, but no specific titles have yet been announced. At the conference, Warner used a copy of Superman to show off how it worked in an HD DVD player, Blu-ray player, and the recently announced LG Super Multi player that plays either. Finally, Warner claims it will not cost "materially" more than a regular disc. At the conference, already an exec from Best Buy has come out in support of the format, but whether or not other studios would ever pick up on Total HD releases is still unknown, although Warner claims they would not have to pay any licensing fees to Warner for using it.

• Friday The 13^th Remake -It looks as though everyone's favorite hockey masked psycho may be coming back from the dead. For a long time there have been rumors of a remake or "re-imagining" of that unlucky day for Crystal Lake counselors, but for awhile it seems the project had been stalled. Not so, according to the producing partners over at Platinum Dunes, as Andrew Form and Brad Fuller gave word at the press conference for their latest "re-working" of THE HITCHER which I attended. When asked about the project, Form gave us this little bit of info, "Well, we're working on a script right now. Not in the first two quarters for that movie; maybe at the end of next year. But right now we're just working on a screenplay." When asked about possible directors, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING, Jonathan Liebesman's name came up.

"It all depends on his schedule. He's got a lot of things rolling around right now, so if he's available and we have a scriptâ We'd love to work with him again; we had a great experience with him." So it seems that Jason and his crew of teenage fodder may be coming back to a theatre near you sooner than you can say we thought

• Aqua Teen Hunger Force The Movie ? -Adult Swim's highly anticipated theatrical film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters is scheduled to hit movie theaters in March 2007. Written, produced and directed by Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, the movie will be distributed by First Look Pictures and marks the studio's initial theatrical foray into animation, as well as Adult Swim's first feature under the Williams Street banner.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters is an action-adventure epic that reveals the mysterious origins of Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake. When an immortal piece of exercise equipment threatens the balance of galactic peace, it is up to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to run away from it. Peril escalates when the Plutonians team up with the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past to strive for ultimate control of the sinister deadly device.

• WWE has confirmed that ECW house shows will be discontinued as of December, with the brand instead touring with Smackdown. The feeling is that they sent ECW out on the road before they were ready for house shows, so now they are taking a step back. WWE had a greatly reduced budget for marketing ECW events (possibly as low as $500 per show) which is probably why they had a hard time getting word out about the shows.
  
  

• Kevin Federline's concerts in Cleveland and Atlantic City have been canceled and his New York concert is on the verge of being canceled. This is all due to lack of ticket sales.

• WWE has come to terms on the release of Psicosis as of today, November 1. We wish Psicosis the best in all future endeavors.

• Daniel Puder comments on Kurt Angle -In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Daniels Puder blasted Kurt Angle. Here are some of the comments.
  
  On Tough Enough and taking Angle down: "I raised my hand, so I got to go in and I was the lucky number two to wrestle him, and I key-locked his ass and made him look like an idiot on national televisionâ and he wasn't very happy about it. That's pretty much what happened."
  
  On a fight with he and Angle: "Let's say I fight for UFC or Strikeforce or WFA, whoever I fight for at that match with Kurt I'd be willing to put â if I lost â let's put it that way, I would be willing to bet my money that I would make on that fight vs. his money that he makes on that fight for the winner. I'd put up every single penny. So, if I made a million bucks, if I get Pay-Per-Views or whatever else, I'd be willing to put that million dollars up against his million that I'd beat him."
  
  On Angle's claims that he could train and take out MMA vets: "He's an amateur and a pro-wrestler, and even though he won the gold medal, I key-locked his ass and I wasn't even trying, which means Tito and Chuck, they would knock his ass out, and I plan on doing the same thing."

• December to Dismember Main Event â RVD v. Big Show ?

At an show today in Milwaukee, Wis., ECW's "Messiah" Paul Heyman declared that Rob Van Dam will, in fact, receive his ECW World Title opportunity at December to Dismember. However, Heyman also made the monumental announcement that RVD's title match will take place in the first-ever Extreme Elimination Chamber.

RVD earned his chance at the championship last week in a Ladder Match and, as announced on ECW.com earlier this week, Van Dam selected ECW's next pay-per-view on Dec. 3 as the setting for his title opportunity. However, the stipulations for that contest fall under Heyman's own judgment.

Thus, ECW World Champion Big Show will defend his gold against five other Extremists within the lethal chamber structure. In addition to the Extreme Giant and RVD, the remaining four participants will be determined through a series of qualifying matches that will take place over the next few weeks â the first of which can be seen Tuesday night on ECW on Sci Fi.

The only thing more dangerous than the chamber itself will be the throng of hardcore competitors enclosed in its massive walls. Who will qualify for this unprecedented encounter? Exactly what awaits RVD, Big Show and the other Extremists at December to Dismember?

• Bisping Returns to the UFC for UFN -While No. 1 contenders in the UFC welterweight and middleweight divisions will be crowned Saturday, Nov. 11 at the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 4, that night will also mark the return of TUF 3 light heavyweight winner Michael Bisping (Pictures).
  
  The undefeated 27-year-old Brit, who stopped Josh Haynes (Pictures) to capture the TUF crown, faces Milwaukee, Wis.'s Eric Schafer (Pictures). Like Bisping, Schafer is 1-0 in official UFC competition, a submission win over Rob MacDonald (Pictures) in August.
  
  The card also features an intriguing middleweight contest between highly-touted Brazilian Thales Leites (Pictures) (9-0) and Denmark's Martin Kampmann (Pictures), winner of his last six. The 24-year-old Kampmann walks into this tilt at 13-2, including triumphs in the World Fighting Alliance and most recently in the UFC. Fighting out of Nova Uniao, home to one of the world's top lightweights in Vitor Ribeiro (Pictures), Leites has compiled an impressive string of victories while showing the capacity to become one of Brazil's top fighters.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort (Pictures) and 1996 Olympic gold medalist judoka Pawel Nastula (Pictures) tested positive for banned substances following their defeats at PRIDE 32 âReal Deal,â reports MMAWeekly.com.

According to the report, the NSAC claims Belfort tested positive for 4-hydroxytestosterone, an anabolic agent known for its anti-estrogenic properties and short half-life. Meanwhile, the Polish grappler provided a sample tainted with nandrolone (commonly referred to as Deca Durabolin) which is used for rapidly building muscle and enhancing recovery from injury.

PRIDE confirmed to Sherdog.com that of the 10 fighters tested following Saturday's card, only Belfort and Nastula came back positive. An official in PRIDE's American office declined to comment on the news without first speaking to Nobuyuki Sakakibara, CEO of PRIDE promoter Dream Stage Entertainment.

This marks the first time PRIDE-promoted fighters have officially tested positive for anabolic steroids. PRIDE, which is not overseen by any sanctioning or regulatory bodies in Japan, has not to this point mandated testing of performance-enhancing drugs for its Japanese events.

Belfort is no stranger to the drug testing policies of North American regulatory bodies. Having fought in five main events in Nevada and California, Belfort, at a minimum, has returned clean tests a handful of times. This past Saturday, the Brazilian lost by decision in a mid-card bout against American Dan Henderson (Pictures).

For Nastula, who has no history of abusing performance-enhancing through his storied judo career, which includes Olympic gold in Atlanta, Saturday marked the first time he was tested by a regulatory body after a mixed martial arts contest.

Ironically, Nastula fell in Las Vegas to former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett (Pictures), the first high-profile MMA casualty of Nevada's drug testing policy. Prior to his bout against Nastula, Barnett was required to provide a drug-free urinalysis so that the NSAC could license him to fight in the States for the first time since being suspended in 2002.

Barnett was also among the fighters â PRIDE heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (Pictures), Mark Coleman (Pictures), Mauricio Rua (Pictures), Kevin Randleman (Pictures), Dan Henderson (Pictures), Phil Baroni (Pictures), and Yosuke Nishijima (Pictures) â who tested clean.

Belfort and Nastula join Kimo Leopoldo (Pictures) and Stephan Bonnar (Pictures) in a well known quartet of mixed martial artists caught, either pre- or post-fight, by regulatory bodies in 2006 with illegal performance-enhancers in their system.

The Brazilian and Polish fighters now face the possibility of suspension and/or fines by the NSAC.

Wii Control Changes

Call it a bonus, call it a gimmick, but we're bound to see Wii games getting packed with wacky control schemes. First up Metal Slug Anthology, promising five nontraditional schemes in addition to GameCube controller support. We suppose it'll add some replay value, but some of these just look like annoyances:

"Nunchuk Control Stick" - movement and fire controlled with Nunchuk; grenades tossed by flicking Wiimote

"Tilt Wii Remote" - tilts control movement; d-pad "up" to jump (no nunchuk attached)

"Wii Remote" - classic controls; flick to toss grenades (no nunchuk attached)

"Arcade" - hold Wiimote vertical against surface (emulates joystick); nunchuk fires and jumps (flick it for grenades)

"Nunchuk Only" - Nunchuk controls all (except weapon switch and alternate attack)

• Wireless Official Guitar Hero Controllers

A technical marvel and a symbolic gesture of freedom shoved into the grimacing face of the everpresent Man, the wireless controller is practically indispensable in this day and age. As a company that's adequately adjusted to modern times, RedOctane has announced that official and, more importantly, wireless Guitar Hero controllers will be hitting store shelves next month. Eurogamer confirms that the gheetarz will be priced at $59.99 and be fully compatible with both heroic strum sims on the PS2. You can also expect RedOctane to not be sued for making these.

Whether this announcement affects the currently tethered (or more "realistic," as the back of the box will point out) Xbox 360 version of the controller remains to be seen, though one can hope that RedOctane's designers are gnawing through prototype cables at this very moment. Incidentally, that suggestion leads to the visual image of their employees being gigantic rats wearing lab coats and wielding plastic guitars in an altogether frightening manner. We're not sure how we feel about that yet.

• Nyko Intercooler killing 360's

Nyko's Intercooler for the Xbox 360 causes more trouble than it's worth, according to Microsoft representative contacted by Elektriq. The problem is its construction: the Intercooler steals some of the power originating from the supply, decreasing the joules the console actually receives to inadequate levels. One representative even reported that the Intercooler has caused "scorch marks" on the console.

For those who simply must have a cooling accessory, one Microsoft representative suggested the Pelican Fan Stand, whose power comes from a USB input. Microsoft does not make a first-party cooling unit, although you're more than welcome to throw the console in the freezer in between play sessions

• Halo 3 Weapons Fuck Yea

Xbox Portugal has posted scans from an upcoming Halo 3 feature to be published in Swedish mag Level. Some serious translation work is needed before the full story comes into focus, but we have gathered that the images are from an alpha build of Halo 3, suggesting that many of the details won't reflect the final version. Check out the one-manned mini-Warthog Mongoose!

In related news, GameStop has started taking pre-orders on Halo 3, with a release date of 11/07. Those familiar with Bungie lore know that 11 and 7 are important numbers in the Halo universe -- the Master Chief if Spartan 117, for example -- so the date is feasible. That, and it'll probably take that long to finish anyway. GameStop requires a reservation fee of $5 for the standard edition, $10 for the collector's edition, and $25 for the Legendary edition. We agree with Joystiq that it's insidious to play on gamers' fears with pre-orders -- the logic being that if you don't pre-order, you won't get it day one -- but at the same time, we want that helmet (at least I do). Still, with a rumored price of $100, the Legendary edition could be a serious pain in your wallet. Would you be willing to lay down ten Hamiltons for it?

• Camo PSP

At this year's Tokyo Game Show, Sony showed off some PlayStation Portables in different colors, including primary hues red, blue, and yellow. But one model had gaming commandos particularly interested.

In a display case on the show floor, a few PSPs adorned in camouflage had many Sony fans wondering if the hard-to-see handhelds were simply prototypes. It turns out that not only will they be available for purchase, they'll also come bundled with one of the most anticipated PSP games of the year.

Konamistyle, the official online outlet for Konami products in Japan, is advertising two Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops bundles--the Konamistyle Limited Premium Pack and the less expensive Premium Pack. Both bundles include the Portable Ops game software, a camouflaged Sony PSP, and a set of pins.

The Konamistyle bundle also includes a snakeskin PSP case, matching wrist-strap, and certificate of authenticity. The Premium Pack includes a less extravagant case and wrist-strap and does not include a certificate. The Konamistyle Pack will retail for 37,800 yen ($322), while the Premium Pack will be 27,800 ($237). Both bundles go on sale in Japan December 21.

• PS3 20k less units for launch

What's worse than 100,000 units at launch? How about 80,000? The Nikkei Keizai Shimbun morning edition reports today that due to component shortages, Sony will have only 80,000 units ready for the PS3's 11/11 Japanese launch. This cuts back by a fifth the initial launch target of 100,000. The lack of digits in that number is even more staggering when you consider that the PS2 sold out of nearly a million units when it launched back in March of 2000.

Having lived through a few weeks of attempting to obtain a PS3 pre-order, we're not too surprised by the lowered shipping numbers. Allocations disappeared quickly at online retailers that were brave enough to start pre-order programs. The online arm of media retailer Tsutaya ran out of units in 6 minutes according to Nikkei (it felt more like 1 minute to us).

Major electronics chains like Yodobashi Camera won't be taking pre-orders, Nikkei reports, so there's only one option left: line up the day before launch. Although with fewer units to go around, we're considering getting in line starting from the week prior.

• Wii DVD

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Japan continues to get pulled from awesome Nintendo news to depressing Sony news. Not only will Japan be receiving a Nintendo Wiiwith DVD playback next year, but they'll also be the only ones getting it -- Nintendo has no plans to release the new Wii in America or Europe. Nintendo also took the time to dismiss rumors that Nintendo ever planned to release the Wii for under $200.

• Wii Release Titles -Nintendo of America today announced that 62 games - 32 of them Wii titles and another 30 Virtual Console classics - will be available for its new generation console in the first five weeks of launch.

"Developers worldwide have enhanced Wii's launch library of new games with countless new ways to play," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, in a statement. "Whether you pick a completely new property or a classic franchise, the Wii experience draws you in."

• Zamzar, a very similar free service with a Web 2.0 touch. It can convert between five image formats, 14 document formats, 11 audio formats, and nine video formats, and unlike Media-Convert you can convert many files at once, up to 100MB (though you can only do one kind of conversion at once). After you've selected a file or files to convert, Zamzar will tell you which formats are available to convert to. Then you supply your e-mail address and click "convert" and Zamzar will e-mail you a link to the converted file. Not only was I impressed with Zamzar's ease of use, I was very impressed by its speed. After clicking on "Convert," I received the e-mail instantaneously. Also, the conversion is pretty faithful--though converting a complex Excel file to HTML didn't result in a perfect facimile, it didn't look bad at all. Zamzar is definitely a tool I'll be keeping on hand for when I need to do a quick conversion.

All with the ability to password protect for download control. Pando is available for PC or Mac, and still not supported for Linux. If you feel the need to send full length videos, or a folder containing 500MB of photos to your relatives, fear not, Pando has you covered.

• New Shuffle on Friday Nov. 3

Apple has gone official with the November 3rd date for "worldwide availability." We're sure you know exactly what this new shuffle will be packing when it drops on Friday, but we'll run it down one more time for old time's sake: 1GB of flash, 240 songs, $79, 12 hours of battery life, all packed into half a cubic inch in volume.

• CastleVania Da Flick -Rogue Pictures, a sub-sub-division of Universal specializing in low-budget action and horror flicks, has signed on to distribute Paul W.S. Anderson's Castlevania adaptation. Rogue will handle distribution in North American, the U.K., Spain and German-speaking territories. Crystal Sky, co-financers of the (not-so-low-budget) $50 million project, will be responsible for distribution throughout the rest of the world.
  
  Anderson is currently scouting out shooting locales in Hungary and Romania for his Blade-meets-Highlander epic. Dracula's castle will be re-imagined in some back lot in Budapest. Shooting starts this spring. Drink your holy water and keep your crosses crossed.
  
  
  

• Inside Man Sequel-Spike Lee-directed bank heist thriller, is getting a sequel reports Digital Spy.

Original writer Russell Gewirtz is already at work on a script with Lee who is in talks to return as director. Producer Brian Grazer is also expected to come back.

No word on story details though the big question is which of the three main actors - Denzel Washington, Clive Own & Jodie Foster - will be back.

LA Confidential 2- Word from the rain-pelted streets of Melbourne today is that Guy Pearce is in talks with Joe Carnahan to reprise his role as for âWhite Jazzâ, the recently announced âL.A Confidentialâ sequel.

Pearceâs Ed Exley â which, youâll recall, was the Melbourne boyâs first major stateside role back in â97â is the only returning character (unless they write in a cameo by one of the others, to entice investors) at this stage.

In âJazzâ, a commanding officer at the LAPD named David Klein, become a scapegoat so that other officers can protect their own dirty laundry from the probing eyes of federal agents. If all this isnât enough, someone â some start to suspect Exley â frames Klein for a murder that someone has captured on film.

Though Nick Nolte, John Cusack, Uma Thurman and Winona Ryder were also linked to this film at one stage, it seems theyâre no longer attached.

I recall Pearce â next seen as Andy Warhol in the film âFactory Girlâ - telling me a few years back that he had received the script for âJazzâ, and that although he isnât a big fan of sequels, would consider it if âit was a better film than the first oneâ.

• 50 & DeNiro - Robert De Niro and 50 Cent are in final negotiations to co-star in âNew Orleans,â a police thriller set to be directed by Tim Hunter.

The film (previously titled âMicrowave Park") centers on a cop who thinks his partner has died in Hurricane Katrina, only to discover that he was shot to death. When he gets a new partner, the pair investigates the murder, taking them on a journey into a world of police corruption.

De Niro is attached to play the lead with 50 Cent in the role of his new partner.

The project was originally set in Los Angeles but changed to New Orleans after the Katrina disaster. Production is tentatively scheduled to begin filming in the city in February.

Millennium Films, Emmett/Furla Films and Len Evans are producing. Millennium is repping sales of the film at AFM.

• Halo by WB or Paramount

Now that both Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox have backed out of financing Halo, producers and Microsoft have concentrated their efforts this week on Warner Bros. and Paramount, reports Variety.

Sony, whose PlayStation is a direct competitor to Microsoftâs Xbox, was never a possibility; Microsoftâs rivalry with Apple made Disney a difficult fit, because Apple CEO Steve Jobs is the companyâs largest individual shareholder and a Disney board member. And New Line is still engaged in a dispute with Halo producers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh over âThe Lord of the Ringsâ proceeds.

Warner Bros. and its financing partners are coming off a tough year, and theyâve so far balked at the deal terms proposed by the Halo, team, adds the trade.

The Universal/Fox deal gave the movie a $128 million budget. Microsoft and the producers would have received 19% of the gross.

Prep work continues at Jacksonâs Weta studios in New Zealand. An Alex Garland script, already rewritten by Enderâs Game scribe D.B Weiss, will get another rewrite by A History of Violence scribe Josh Olson.

• Faces of Death Returns

Rogue Pictures is developing Faces of Death, a remake of the series of gory videotapes that became cult faves in the 1970s and â80s. Variety says J.T. Petty is attached to direct.

The first âFacesâ tape came out in 1978; it wasnât immediately a mass hit but slowly caught on among young people.

The gonzo movies depicted the gruesome and varied ways people and animals can die via explicit footage that many viewers believed to be real, including a famous scene in which live monkey brains were served to diners at a restaurant.

Several movies followed, all continuing the theme and containing characters with credits such as âLeader of Flesh Eating Cult.â John Alan Schwartz wrote and directed many of the pics, sometimes under pseudonyms.
